Even though the number of home based businesses is ever increasing, it can be very difficult adjusting working from home, especially for someone who has kept a regular job for some time. Working styles required for a home based business are vastly different from those required in a regular workforce.
To begin with, a regular job comes with certain characteristics: you commute, you work in an office, you eat at the cafeteria, you chat with your colleagues over a coffee break. All these are normal activities you perform in the course of a regular work day.
Working from home can be very different. While the benefits include not having to commute or keep regular hours, the biggest problem is that of isolation. Especially if your work is virtual and you work through the internet, you are likely to miss social interaction and the company of other adults.
You are likely to be working alone for long stretches of time and may have trouble dealing with the lack of contact. In businesses that are not virtual, the initial period can be isolating before you start making contact with your clients.
The impact of working from the comforts of your home is not necessarily a positive thing.
To begin with, you may get too carried away with the ‘comfort’ aspect of it, especially if you live alone. If you live with your family, you may another set of problems, namely the inability to keep your personal and business life apart. Additionally, being with the same set of people all the time can lead to friction and strained relationships.
Your social life is also likely to be impacted by a home based business. If you work online, your social life is going to get hampered while you set up and run a successful home based business. If your business involves interacting with people, ensure you don’t isolate your immediate social circle by trying to get them involved in your business.
Finally, a home based business requires discipline, careful planning and great time management that are in-built in the structure of a regular job. When you start a home based business, you are going to have to bring these attributes to your business for it to be successful.
